Are those really transformative learning outcomes? Validating the relevance of a reliable process

Transformative learning is considered a cornerstone for advances in sustainability, because transformative shifts perspective will be necessary humankind to transition towards it. The theory of (TL) has been hundreds applied studies diverse fields, yet it remains descriptive and unable prescribe which conditions processes could reliably produce TL outcomes. Here an in-depth case study used investigate candidate process from another field unknown researchers (called WeValue InSitu) reported regularly some forms informally denoted ‘transformative outcomes’. goal determine if these formally qualify, this would imply the standard InSitu reliable way produce, investigate, outcomes (TLOs). Using grounded thematic open-coding full transcripts three sets post-event interviews, compared against statements made prior event, shown unambiguously that four have formal nature, as meaning schemes, one developed into wider shift over weeks. These findings indicate can likely TLOs identifiably, offering ‘pedagogical laboratory’ systematic link its sub-processes detail produces, allowing step-wise progress theory-building. It also indicates prescriptively applied, within limitations such maximum group sizes specialist facilitators, trigger local groups villagers, governance officers, environmental enthusiasts, community-based organizations and/or government committees, become more focused self-aware mobilized sustainability actions. This thus opens door new research agenda theory-building applications sustainability.
